Chapter 1 - Physical Quantities & Measurements

a) Name the apparatus used to measure the

(i) internal diameter of a test-tube

(ii) mass of a brick

b) We often hear people saying their weight in kilograms, eg. my weight is 50 kg. However, we know that the SI unit for mass is actually kilogram (kg). Why is there a difference?

ANSWER:

ai) Vernier Caliper

ii) Beam balance

b) Mass is a scalar quantity while weight is a vector quantity. Mass is the amount of matter in a body while weight is the amount of force acting on a certain mass due to gravity.

DID YOU KNOW?!?

Our weight on the moon is lower than our weight on earth as Moon has a lower gravitational force. But, our mass will remain the same on both Earth and Moon.
